| Apology | Report Error | | Description: As is the case with confession, apology is also widely linked to forgiveness and more particularly reconciliation. Some contend that receiving an apology from someone who has hurt us encourages forgiving especially when apologies are elaborate and include admissions of guilt. An apology by the offender is also seen to facilitate forgiving by interrupting the offended person’s inference that an offender’s acts correspond to and derives from the offender’s character. Hearing a true heartfelt apology also helps to rehumanize the enemy/oppressor in the eyes of the victim and this paved the way to rebuilding trust in the relationship. Forgiveness | Report Error | | Description: Until two decades ago, the social scientific community has paid scant attention to forgiveness as a phenomenon that warrants investigation. This is despite its obvious human importance. However, with the escalation of mass scale social conflicts and the limited successes of traditional approaches to resolving these, phenomena such as forgiveness are now increasingly being explored as political constructs in order to uncover its potential for contributing to peace in countries where post conflict reconstruction is underway. | Reconciliation | Report Error | | Description: – Although it is accepted that reconciliation is related to forgiveness, there seems to be little agreement as to the exact nature of the relationship between the tow concepts. Some scholars (especially those grounded within the Judeo-Christian tradition) use forgiveness and reconciliation interchangeably thus implying that they are one and the same. The dominant view, however, is that forgiveness and reconciliation are two separate though related concepts. Reconciliation is conditional whereas forgiveness occurs independently from remorseful actions of the injurer. Forgiveness is thus an unconditional action, which is controlled exclusively by the injured person.
